United Nations Day

Thanks to the untiring work of Rosy Giardini who was the driving organizational force behind United Nations Day and to parents and volunteers, the support of Katie Ferguson and the PTSA, as well as the school, the Fifth Annual Observance of United Nations Day was enjoyed by hundreds last Friday, October 23.

The event was held in the smaller of the two gyms in the high school and the cavenous hall was awash in banners, costumes, maps, flags and cultural artifacts from more than 25 countries around the world—countries like Lithuania, United Kingdom, Russia, Belgium, India, Bangladesh, Ireland  and many more.

Some of the visitors were elementary school children who played games and  had their “passports” stamped. Each country had a stamp. Children were issued passports and when their class visited the United Nations “hall” their mission was to go to each table and get their passport stamped.

“I think parents appreciate the way Shanghai American School celebrates our diversity,” said Mery Montgomery, an elementary school parent. “We love the unique and diverse cultural community of which we’re a part and we appreciate how this diversity enriches our experience together.”
